Executive summary
This Report was prepared for the Commonwealth Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts as an independent review of the approach taken for the adaption of the CSIRO Pesticide Impact Rating Index (PIRI) to Tasmanian conditions. The review followed a structured process including a study of background progress, technical and scientific reports prior to detailed technical discussions during a 2-day meeting with CSIRO project leaders, Dr Rai Kookana and Dr Ray Correll at CSIRO Adelaide.
The review needed to cover the adequacy or otherwise of the work program as agreed between DEWHA, DPIW and CSIRO and to provide advice on:
- whether the work program was adequate
- if the program was considered to be inadequate the reviewer should provide advice on what additional processes should have been followed
- what, if any, additional steps could be taken to better adapt PIRI as it now stands to Tasmanian conditions
- what, if any, additional steps could be taken to further adapt PIRI to Tasmanian conditions
- how the lessons learnt with this project can be applied to the adaptation of PIRI to other environments in Australia.
